The story of the Old Dillard Foundation is one of compassion, community, and unwavering dedication to preserving the rich cultural history of Fort Lauderdale's African American community. It all began with Ernestine Ray, a passionate curator at the Old Dillard Museum, who recognized that to truly support the museum and its mission, she needed to create a foundation that would act as its funding arm. Ernestine's vision was rooted in a deep love for the history housed within the museum, originally known as “The Colored School,” which served as a crucial educational space during a time of segregation.
With her heart set on this mission, Ernestine assembled a group of like-minded individuals who shared her passion for preserving the past. The foundation's first board members—Mary Bacon as President, Gale Butler as Vice President, and Marie-Carol Desrosiers as Treasurer—brought their unique strengths and commitment to the cause. Together, they laid the groundwork for an organization that would not only support the museum financially but also amplify its role as a vital cultural institution.
As the years passed, the Old Dillard Foundation grew, and in 2008, Patricia West stepped into the role of president. Under her compassionate leadership, the foundation flourished, expanding its board to 12 active members who were equally devoted to the mission. They understood that the foundation was more than just a fundraising entity; it was a lifeline for the community, a bridge connecting the past to the present.
The Old Dillard Foundation became a beacon of hope, offering programming that educated and inspired the community. In 2015, the board took a significant step by expanding its reach into Broward County, becoming an integral part of the Destination Sistrunk Pilot. Sistrunk Boulevard, known as the cultural heart of Fort Lauderdale’s oldest Black community, was a place of resilience and history, once home to the area’s hospital for Blacks during segregation. The foundation’s involvement in this initiative revitalized the community, bringing new life to its historical narrative.
In 2019, a transformative moment occurred when the School Board took over the museum, allowing the Old Dillard Foundation to operate as its own independent entity. This change was met with enthusiasm as it opened doors for collaboration. The foundation partnered with the Fort Lauderdale Housing Authority to provide innovative programming for the NW Sistrunk Corridor, focusing on education, cultural engagement, and community development. These programs not only honored the past but also empowered the community, fostering a sense of pride and connection to their heritage.
Through its compassionate efforts, the Old Dillard Foundation has become a vital part of Fort Lauderdale's narrative, embodying the spirit of resilience and dedication that defines the community. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved when passionate individuals come together to support a shared mission. The foundation continues to inspire and educate, ensuring that the legacy of the Old Dillard Museum—and the stories of those who came before—will live on for generations to come.
